FAQs

What is improvisational comedy?

Improvisational comedy or improv is a form of theatre in which nothing on stage has been pre-written or prepared and largely made up by the performers on stage from audience suggestions.

Why improv in the Southside?

We wanted improv to be more available in areas of Glasgow other than the City Centre. We exist as a place to practice improv, stage skills and even teaching, whether that's supplementary to other improv classes or learning, or primarily with the Cooperative. We are proud to be one of the few places in Glasgow to practice short form, and to use accessible venues for workshops, classes and jams.

Who can attend Improv Cooperative jams, classes and workshops?

For Improv Cooperative jams, anyone over 18, who accepts our Code of Conduct and wishes to practice improv can attend. If you're new to the world of improv, the jam host will make sure that any exercises are explained to you. For our workshops and classes, again, over 18s and who accepts our Code of Conduct, but some experience may be required which will be explained in the event description.

How much are tickets to Improv Cooperative events?

All of our jams are free, but we do accept donations to support venue hire which is around £10 per jam. Our workshops are pay-what-you-can, with a £4 suggested price (this doesn't include Eventbrite fees if you book online). This money goes covers venue hire, and to compensate workshop teachers. Our monthly show, All Made Up!, is £4 on the door via cash or card. You can also book on Eventbrite, which will have Eventbrite fees added on top.

What is an improv jam?

Our improv jams are events to practice short form improv (2nd Monday of the month) and long form improv (3rd Monday of the month). They are a great way to gain experience, to practice the fundamentals of improv, and to improvise with new people. Jams will have a host who will explain any warm-ups, games and exercises. Jams do not have an audience and everyone is expected to participate. Please note that jams are not classes, and you won't received feedback or coaching.

What is the structure of The Improv Cooperative?

We're a volunteer-led organisation without an explicit structure or hierarchy. We have a team of volunteer organisers who book venues, manage jam and workshops hosts, coordinate social media and communications. If you'd like to volunteer, let us know!
